Reusing Old Doors to Build a Coffee Table

Do you have an old door in your home? Are you planning to just dispose it so that it won’t be a bother anywhere in your house? Well, don’t rush on your decision as there are so many things that you can do with that. One way and perhaps the most popular approach in recycling an old door is to use it as a table. Sounds easy right? Well, here’s how to do it.

What You’ll Need
  • Old wood door
  • Paint
  • Stain
  • Paint and stain supplies
  • Sander
  • Saw
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Old table base
  • 8 ‘L’-shaped metal brackets
  • Screws

Reusing or recycling old things can be a fun and rewarding experience. Old doors are an especially great candidate for this treatment. Many of them have a lot of character and can be re-styled as unique coffee tables. A wood door will work best for this project, but you should be able to substitute a metal one if you choose. Here’s how to get started.

Step 1 — Cut to Size and Sand

Measure the door and cut one of two ways: The door can overlap the reused table base or you can cut it to match the table base exactly. Once you have cut the door, sand down all its surfaces.

Step 2 — Paint and Stain

Use a high-gloss paint in a tone that compliments your existing furniture or décor. Paint all surfaces, including the base of the old table. Wait for it to dry and put on another coat of the paint. Since it is a recycled piece, the look will be shabby but elegant. Use the stain to do a light coat over the paint. It will leave a lacquered-like finish that, once dry, will show the paint color underneath as well.

Step 3 — Attach to the Base

Use the ‘L’ brackets to attach the table to the base. You can hide the brackets by putting them on the inside of the leg and painting it with the same paint color you used for the wood. Secure the table onto 2 sides of each leg in order to make certain that it …
