5 Signs for an Air-conditioner Repair

Having a fully-functioning air conditioner is practically a right for property owners. A few cities are intolerable without this vital feature. Losing the use of an air conditioner just for a single day is difficult, particularly in the intense summer. At the end of the day, walking from the car towards the door is made bearable with the anticipation of a cold home as soon as the threshold is crossed.

Whilst they might appear to be tiny problems, overlooking the warning signs can lead to discomfort and overspending. Professional air cooling services are not free. As a result, before calling anyone to your house, you need to be able to evaluate if you need one in the first place.

Odd odors
Air conditioners shouldn’t smell odd. When there is an odd smell coming from an air conditioner, it might mean not so good, both financially and medically. Odd odors could mean an overflow drain has issues with bacteria or mildew. In old properties, it could be essential to have the duct work cleaned to remove odors related to smoking or age.

Strange noises
The sound of an air conditioner is becoming part of the normal background noise in some homes. Few individuals actually observe it anymore. However, when that sounds changes in any manner, it abruptly becomes very noticeable. It is additionally an indication that someone needs to get in touch with their air conditioning repair services. A squealing sound can point out an issue with a belt, like one might experience in a car. Rattling noises could mean an element is loose and then it really is crucial that you call a professional.

Warm or stale air
Have you found that your air conditioning unit just isn’t as effective as it used to be? Whenever you place your hands to the vents are they much less cold as always or not cold in any way? This can be a problem like compressor failure, or perhaps your systems Freon levels are just way too low. When you observe an issue like this, you need to call a professional repairman to come out and take a look

Vacillating temperatures
In case you are having thermostat issues and your air conditioning system is performing inconsistently, this may mean that you have a malfunctioning thermostat. A good way to tell if it is an issue is if a section of your property is cold while another part is not at all.

Leaking Fluids
Air conditioning units are subject to condensation, as moist air passes across the cold evaporation coil. Yet, should your unit is visibly leaking fluid; you may have a mechanical problem that will require the attention of an air conditioning contractor. Water leakage inside or outside your home might signify the coil drainage system-where the condensation is routed-is stopped up. When you notice oil leakage, you may have a rust problem which is reducing performance.

Attic Exhaust Fans

Attic exhaust fans are absolutely crucial to keeping a healthy home. The main purpose of attic exhaust fans is to provide ventilation to help control the temperature in your attic.

Attic Exhaust Fan

Attics can collect heat, increasing your cooling costs in the summer, and moisture, which can result in mold, but these issues are remedied by installing an attic exhaust fan.

How Attic Exhaust Fans Work

Installed in your roof, an attic fan draws heat from your home and attic and pushes it outside, while pulling cooler air into the space. Think of the exhaust fan in your bathroom: it works in much the same way. However, attic fans aren’t all created equal. there are a variety of choices depending on your home’s needs.

Look for fans made of metal, which are the most durable, and that incorporate a screen to keep insects and other pests out. Fans may be installed on your roof top or at a gable-end.

Traditional Attic Fan

For many homes, a traditional fan suffices to cool the attic. You’ve seen these space-aged, dome-shaped fans that are driven by a belt. A drawback is that they leave an opening in the roof, which allows cold air to infiltrate in the winter. They can also be loud and require frequent maintenance as the belt can wear out.

Electrical Attic Fans

Electric fans can move large volumes of air. Many include thermostats that help save energy. They are more difficult to install than traditional attic fans because they require wiring.

Solar Attic Fan

Save on operating costs by using a solar powered attic fan. However, efficiency can diminish if there is not enough light to power it.

Wind-Powered Fan

If you live in a windy area and are seeking an environmentally friendly attic exhaust fan, consider the wind-powered fan. Wind blows the turbine vent, which in turn generates an air current that cools your attic.

Difference Between Best HVAC Brands

Building a new home or upgrading an existing one? Air conditioning and home heating is an important part of that process. So what do you consider when choosing the best air conditioning brand for your home.

two men installing an HVAC unit

If you’re in the market for a new furnace, air conditioner or heat pump system, then chances are that you need to hire someone to install it properly.

So you went online to start figuring out which brand, which model, which size, which contractor, how much, what financing options, etc. — a lot of things to consider!

Couple that with the fact that this expense is most likely unplanned, perhaps even an emergency situation, and it becomes quite a big decision that needs to be made quickly. Here’s how to do it:

Why do you want to replace your HVAC system?

If you’re shopping for a new HVAC system because you recently had service, and the service tech told you that you had to, or that it’s dangerous, then let’s take a step back for a second.

It’s very rare that a system must be replaced. Now, sometimes repairs can cost as much as a new system, but that doesn’t mean you must go that route. There are almost always options for repair.

So, if your answer is, “because I have to,” then get a second opinion.

RELATED: 3 Tips to Avoid Poor HVAC Service

Now, maybe that system is getting old and you just don’t want to deal with annual repairs, or you want higher efficiency to reduce those utility bills, or your system has never heated or cooled your home just right. OK, those are some good reasons to replace your HVAC unit.

Anyway, it’s time to pick a contractor. Wait a minute, what about brand?

Who is the best HVAC manufacturer?

I have an Apple iPhone, a Honda Civic, and I’m reading this on a Sony laptop while drinking my Starbucks coffee! Brands are burned into our psyche as Americans.

For most purchases we make, you pick the brand first, then go to a dealer or retailer. Here is how the story goes: I see an ad for a Honda Civic, see people driving them around and now I want one.

How to Clean and Straighten AC Condenser Coils

The condenser coils are a vital part of your air conditioner unit. Without it, your aeration and cooling system won’t work appropriately. It is therefore vital to keep it in working condition.

The AC condenser coils need regular maintenance and cleaning along with the indoor AC evaporator coils because the condenser unit is other half a split central air conditioner system. The purpose of the condenser coil is to release the heat absorbed by the refrigerant at the evaporator coils inside the home so it’s ready for the next cooling cycle. If the condenser coils are clogged with dirt or the fins are bent it will block air flow through the coils and interfere with the heat exchange. This causes the system to work harder and drives up your electric bill.

Bent AC Condenser Coil Fins

The air conditioner system was installed by the home builder and are now about 12 years old. The Heil “entry model” or economy condenser units have coils that are protected by a wire grille which in reality isn’t much protection. I noticed the condenser coil fins had become bent and damaged sometime in the past 2 years. Were the fins bent by the hail storm or more likely by the pressure washer guy?

The bent condenser coil fins are very noticeable in the 2012 photo. The damaged fins are straightened by fin combing in the 2014 image:

How to Clean and Straighten AC Condenser Coils

I called my HVAC service company for the twice a year seasonal maintenance and asked for condenser coil cleaning and fin combing to straighten the bent fins which cost an extra $125 per unit.

These are 3 ton (or 36,000 BTU/hr) condenser units. The coils are painted black by the factory which has mostly worn off. The coils show numerous silver looking areas with bent fins or impact damage. The individual strikes could be something thrown by the lawn mower or a hail strike. That bent fins near ground level are probably from careless use of the weedeater. I believe the pressure washer guy caused the large area of bent fins at the left corner when he cleaned the house (BTW – never pressure wash AC coils!):

There are many different ways to keep your home comfortable. A ductless cooling and heating system provides efficiency and energy savings ideal for each and every home.

Modern living room with wall-mounted ductless unit

Most people have heard of ductless cooling and heating systems, and they have probably seen the small, indoor devices installed high on walls in homes, restaurants or office buildings. But what do you really know about these systems?

1. They Offer Highly Flexible Solutions

Whereas traditional heat pumps and central air conditioning systems force cooled and heated air through ducts, ductless systems deliver air directly into different zones. They are comprised of a small outdoor unit and one or more indoor units that require nothing more than mounting capabilities and access to electricity.

Sometimes referred to as split systems, multi-split systems, or split-ductless systems, ductless cooling and heating offers home and business owners a cost-effective way to replace inefficient window units, space heaters and electric baseboard heaters. They can be installed in home additions, new construction, condominiums and apartments, or to improve temperature control in specific rooms. Ductless systems can even be fit for buildings that currently use ducted forced-air systems.

2. They Save You Money

One of the biggest reasons why homeowners switch to ductless cooling and heating is overall cost savings. In recent years, utility costs across the country have skyrocketed. When a home’s temperature depends upon an inefficient system, monthly bills can quickly climb out of control. Ductless systems operate on less power – they are smaller than traditional forced-air systems, and because the temperature-controlled air is delivered directly into a room, there is no loss in efficiency. Multi-split systems also allow homeowners to …

Biomass has been around for the last 10 years, but only now is it becoming popular. What is it so? What did people discovered that gained their interest in such?

Wood burning stove image

Wood-fuelled heating systems, also called biomass systems, burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide warmth in a single room or to power central heating and hot water boilers.

A stove burns logs or pellets to heat a single room – and may be fitted with a back boiler to provide water heating as well. A boiler burns logs, pellets or chips, and is connected to a central heating and hot water system. A wood-fuelled biomass boiler could save you up to £990 a year compared to electric heating.

The benefits of biomass heating

  1. Affordable heating fuel
Although the price of wood fuel varies considerably, it is often cheaper than other heating options.
  2. Financial support
Wood fuel boiler systems could benefit from the Renewable Heat Incentive.
  3. A low-carbon option
The carbon dioxide emitted when wood is burned is the same amount that was absorbed over the months and years that the plant was growing. The process is sustainable as long as new plants continue to grow in place of those used for fuel. There are some carbon emissions caused by the cultivation, manufacture and transportation of the fuel, but as long as the fuel is sourced locally, these are much lower than the emissions from fossil fuels.

If you live in Scotland, view case studies and examples where homeowners have installed a wood-fuelled heating system.

Costs, savings and financial support

For boilers, an automatically fed pellet boiler for an average home costs between £9,000 and £21,000, including installation, flue, fuel store and VAT at 5 per cent. Manually fed log boiler systems can be slightly cheaper.

Pellet costs depend mainly on the size and method of delivery. If you have room for a large fuel store that will accept several tonnes of pellets at a time, delivered in bulk by tanker, you can keep the cost down to around £220 per tonne in most parts of the UK.

Logs can be cheaper than pellets, but costs depend on the wood suppliers in your local area, as they cost a lot to transport. If you have room to store more than a year’s worth of logs you can save money by buying unseasoned logs and letting them season for a year. Search for wood fuel suppliers in your area on the Biomass Suppliers List.

Savings in carbon dioxide emissions are very significant – up to 15.7 tonnes a year – when a wood-fuelled boiler replaces a solid (coal) fired system. Financial savings are more variable – if you replace an ….

Swamp Coolers or Evaporative Aircoolers for Home Use

Photo from

One of the most affordable strategies to cool your living or working space is with evaporative coolers. Evaporative coolers, generally known as Swamp coolers are helpful machines for people who want to cool their houses. These coolers are among the safest, most effective and environment-friendly cooling systems available in the market. It is mechanics and concept is simple and it could efficiently cool and area without consuming lots of resources and energy. This is the perfect cooling system for everybody who is working with a tight budget.

Evaporative air coolers are recommended over air conditioners given that they use up less energy. When using evaporative coolers you’ll be able to lessen your energy consumption by more than 33 percent. Nevertheless, you to run these coolers you might need lots of water. Also, homeowners can pick to use the smaller evaporative coolers which are easy to install than the larger units which need ductwork in the home to spread the air.

An evaporative air cooler works on the principle of an endothermic reaction. An endothermic reaction is a procedure that absorbs energy in the form of heat. The evaporative air cooler passes air via a wet media. As the air goes through the water in the wick evaporates and the reaction brings about heat up to be absorbed.

There are several of evaporative designs that individuals can purchase. You have to evaluate your need such as space, cooling capacity to ensure you won’t have to spend much on a very expensive type. When choosing a swamp cooler, you should note the unit’s air moving capacity, as well as set up and maintenance prerequisites. Some swamp coolers may require more work than portable air conditioners for instance replenishing the water supply, draining the unit, and cleaning the cooling pads. Nevertheless, evaporative coolers are produced using a simplistic design, hence they have very minimal servicing need.

Prior to when you install an evaporative cooler, ensure that you look at the building codes of your area. After you’ve examined the codes, you must determine the location and mark the opening. You should then construct a platform of iron or wood and attach the platform to the opening. When fixing the platform, don’t forget to don’t cut any structural framework. The dimensions of the opening and the structure will depend on the instructions that come with the machine. If you’re not skilled with it, you may seek professional help to prevent damage and further accidents

There are plenty of sites that provide information on evaporative coolers. You could conduct your own little research to find out more about evaporative coolers.

Five Types of Heating Systems and Their Uses

When it is hot outdoors we would like to feel cool; and whenever it’s cold we want to be warm. Eventually even the best maintained system will break down and need to be replaced. It’s very easy to replace your heating and air system with the same type that you have but is it the best type for your residence or business. If you’re in the market to either purchase a brand new heating system or are attempting to replace a broken system, you should become knowledgeable about all the kinds of heating options that are available to you. As always, being aware of what is out there can have a big impact on your decision. Here are just some few heating systems that you might want to take into account at home.”

If renovating a house or place of business, you need to design the room in a fashion that boosts efficiency while lessening expenditure. This practical goal ought to explain to all decision-making during the renovation process. You should contemplate, of course, the utilities that run in a given space daily.

Heating and air systems are costly therefore you need to choose the right system to make your home or business comfy. By being aware of what type works best for your home or business will get you on track to make your house or business a comfy place. Here are a few of the more popular heating systems options you could have at home.

1. Forced Air System

A forced-air heating system does exactly what its name suggests: a furnace heats air by using up a number of fuels; then, fans or blowers force the heated air through the property. The heated air extends to each room of a house by using a ducting system, which is a network of pipes that leads to separate room openings. But, one disadvantage of forced-air furnaces is that they can waste fuel, which is a problem for both financial and environmental reasons.

2. Radiant Heating System

This type of system can take numerous forms, including a pot-bellied stove or in-floor tubing. The heat is directly moved to the cool surface, heating it up. It’s just like the forced air system for the reason that it may run on many different fuel types including gas, oil, propane, or electricity. Although it does a great job heating and creates an incredibly comfortable environment, this heating option can be costly to install and can take a while to heat up your home.

3. Hydronics

It is a similar idea to the radiant heating system. The difference is, the hot water from the boiler runs into baseboard units mounted on the wall. This system runs quietly, and the temperature may be controlled with accuracy and very quickly. However, the baseboard units should not be obstructed by furniture, so this is not the best option for each and every space.

4. Steam Radiating Heating System

Often called a cast iron upright radiator, this method isn’t very commonly used today. Generally, water is run through the unit and heated by a pilot, that turns the water to steam. The steam heats the iron, dispersing warmth throughout the room. The steam condenses back into the water and it is drained through more pipes. This is a very efficient, quick system, and incredibly comfy. However, it could be an ugly unit, and it limits furniture placement.

5. Geothermal System

Modern developments in technology have caused the geothermal heater. Very costly to set up, but efficient over time, many claim them to be quite cost efficient. Geothermal heaters use the energy from the earth and can be implemented for both heating and air conditioning.

Benefits of Water Heater

Water heater is an appliance that will last for a long period. That’s the reason why we actually don’t put much focus on it. In case the water heater fails or does not work any more, then it’s the perfect time to buy a another one. But first you have to know things that you should put into consideration before buying the replacement unitThese pointers are simply to give you the fundamental knowledge on water heater types and features. Yet, if you happen to still end up baffled and unsure on some decisions, it’s best that you simply contact a plumbing company to guide you every step of the way. Through them, you can make sure that the project will be done correctly.”

Water heater replacement is an activity that is carried out rarely. Often it would take 5-10 years before you could find defects in it. If you’re having issues such as the hot water doesn’t last that much or the water have some odd smell and taste, then most likely it is indeed time to look for a replacement. Here are points that you must put into consideration before selecting one.

What type of power?

When you purchase a water heater, you may always wish to have an effective and cost-effective one. Water heater makes use of different types of energy such as solar, atmospheric gas, electric and more. If you want of saving fuel cost, choose solar water heater. And if you intend to be more eco-friendly, choose a natural gas heater. Additionally when you compare the operating costs of electric and gas water heater, the latter is more cost effective.

What size do you need?

To decide on the right water heater for your residence, you need to think about the size of your household as well as other things that add up to your Peak Demand Output Requirement. It is to make sure you aren’t squandering energy in water heating. A small (50- to 60-gallon) storage tank is normally sufficient for one to three people. A medium (80-gallon) storage tank is helpful for three to four people. A large tank is suitable for 4 to 6 persons. If you are not pretty sure in this decision, you could seek the guidance of a plumber to give you the best choice for your family needs.

Where will it be installed?

It’s a typical situation that replacement water heaters are placed on the same location of the previous one. Having said that, you should determine the height and width to be sure sufficient space exists for installation since there can be changes on the size or capacity of your water heater. For example, if your hot water use heightens and you must upgrade to a bigger tank size, it could be necessary to run plumbing to a different area so the new, larger unit will fit. What ever it can be, it is still advisable to let a professional plumber decide on the right spot.

Do you want a tank or tankless model?

Traditional storage water heaters utilize a tank to heat up the water within it. It is actually preferred by some since the tank water heater are less expensive in comparison with tankless. Tankless units heat water are now on demand and are more cost-effective. However, volume is fewer and a single tankless unit is normally suited to serve no more than two hot water demand points at a time. It’s an energy-efficient option, though has a high initial cost at sometimes two or three times the price of a traditional water heater.

Water heater replacement shouldn’t be accomplished for those that are not really knowledgable about it. It takes a skill and knowledge to accomplish such job. And so whenever you’re unsure on your selections, you must seek out professional help. A plumber is the best individual that will help you with this and they can guarantee that everything will be setup appropriately.
